Some might think it’s hard to have been around since the very beginning and still be a strong reference in paving the way forward, but that is exactly what Lisbon’s very own Rui Vargas represents in the vibrant Portuguese dance music scene.
Eager to share his musical findings with an audience broader than his friends, a young Rui found himself starting a lifelong career as a radio host. Soon after, in 1988, he started DJing at Frágil, a small steamy club that would forever change Lisbon’s nightlife. Not only has he witnessed the explosion of House and Techno music in the country but directly contributed to it, shaping early on a distinct style to his sound that can best be described as an innate ability to pick the best record for any given time, be it either on a small intimate club or headlining the biggest festival stages.
This explains the apparent ease with which he conducts his 7 hour long sessions at the world famous Lux-Frágil club (where since its opening 17 years ago he doubles as resident DJ and programmer), well as why he’s played at key worldwide places such as Panorama Bar (Berlin), Ministry of Sound (London), D-Edge (São Paulo), Goa (Madrid), Showcase (Paris) or City Hall (Barcelona).
With a career of more than 25 years, Rui Vargas continues to be one of Portugal’s biggest – and most passionate – conveyors of music, not only in the DJ booth but also with his bi-weekly 2-hour radio show on the Antena 3 National Radio. You might think he has seen or heard mostly all - but yet, he continues to shine a light into the future.
